Early Interceptive Orthodontics

Orthodontic problems don’t always wait until all the adult teeth are in — and neither should treatment. Phase 1, or interceptive orthodontics, is designed for children between the ages of 6 and 10 whose developing jaws and bite patterns point to potential problems down the road. By taking action early, we can use the natural growth process to our advantage — expanding the jaw, correcting crossbites, and creating space for incoming permanent teeth while the bones are still pliable and responsive. Children who complete Phase 1 treatment often need less time in braces later, and some avoid more complex treatment altogether.

Palate Expanders

A narrow upper jaw can cause crowding, crossbites, and difficulty breathing through the nose — and addressing it early, while a child’s palate is still developing, is far simpler than waiting until the bones have fully fused. A palate expander is a custom appliance that fits in the roof of the mouth and gently widens the upper jaw over a period of months. The process is gradual and, for most children, surprisingly comfortable. Expansion creates room for permanent teeth to erupt in better positions, often reducing or eliminating the need for tooth extractions and shortening future orthodontic treatment time.

Retainers

Finishing braces or aligners is a huge milestone — but the work isn’t quite done yet. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original positions once active treatment ends, which is why wearing a retainer consistently is so important. We offer both removable retainers, which are worn nightly and easy to take care of, and fixed (bonded) retainers, which are discreetly attached to the back of the teeth for continuous, hands-free retention. Our team will recommend the option that best suits your child’s lifestyle and make sure they — and you — understand exactly how to use and maintain it.

Orthodontic Monitoring and Progress Visits

Every child deserves access to quality orthodontic care, regardless of their unique challenges or abilities. Our Kempwood team has experience working with children who have sensory sensitivities, developmental differences, physical disabilities, or significant dental anxiety. We take our time, adapt our environment and communication style to what works best for each individual child, and never rush the trust-building process. If your child has specific needs that might affect their dental experience, please let us know when scheduling — we’ll do everything we can to make their visits as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Financing and Insurance for Pediatric Orthodontics

We know that orthodontic treatment is an investment, and we’re committed to helping families make it work within their budget. Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic benefits for children, and our front office team will verify your coverage upfront so there are no surprises. For any remaining costs, we offer flexible payment plan options that spread treatment fees into affordable monthly installments. Our goal is to make sure the cost of care never stands between your child and the smile they deserve — so don’t hesitate to ask us about financing options during your consultation.

Free Orthodontic Consultation

Wondering whether your child needs orthodontic treatment — or when to start? Our free consultations take the guesswork out of it. One of our experienced orthodontic providers will take a close look at your child’s teeth, bite, and jaw development, walk you through what they find, and explain all available treatment paths in plain language. There’s no pressure, no obligation, and no cost. The American Association of Orthodontists suggests bringing kids in for their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7 — early enough to spot concerns while the jaw is still growing and most responsive to treatment.
